INTERNET DAY, IN PISA THE CELEBRATIONS OF 30 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST CONNECTION:THE INSTITUTE TECIP FOR THE FUTURE OF THE NETWORK

On 30th April 1986 the CNUCE, the Electronic Computing Center of CNR in Pisa, connected for the first time with the Arpanet network, born in the United States to bridge university computers, research institutions and military units. Since then, Italy becomes the fourth European country after Norway, UK and West Germany, to be connected. Thirty years later you look at the future of the network from Pisa where we celebrate these pioneers, with an event organized by the Institute of Communication, Information and Perception Technologies (TeCIP) of  Sant'Anna School for Advanced Studies with its Director Professor Giancarlo Prati.

The second Internet Day is expected on 29th April 2016 to celebrate the revolution which began 30 years ago. At CNR Auditorium in Pisa, along with the personalities of 1986, there will also be today’s and future protagonists of the Internet, ready to work toward new goals, with a special focus on Research results in Italy. The President of the Council of Ministers, Matteo Renzi, and the Minister of Education, University and Research, Stefania Giannini, announced their participation, to commemorate that day and - above all - to announce the next steps in research projects.

Giancarlo Prati, Director of Sant'Anna School Institute of Communication, Information and Perception Technologies (TeCIP), will discuss about the Institute's experience and its Photonic Integrated Technologies Center, INPHOTEC, where, the future Internet is going to be born thanks to the union between creation and innovation developed on the telecommunication systems. The importance of photonics for the Internet infrastructure has been acknowledged, since puts into effect technologies enabling to the Internet of Things, increasing the data transmission speed and bandwidth, besides decreasing the consumption. In the coming years, the integrated photonics technologies will gradually find  their place alongside the electronics to improve the network services.

A great event to celebrate the revolution that began 30 years ago and to project themselves into 21st-century: the pervasiveness of photonics technology in the Internet of Things, moving from fiber to optical circuits, will allow us to make the best use of all the advantages brought by the photons.
